Comparison of Mac Vs. PC Essay
1002 Words5 Pages
"Hello I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" (Wikipedia). Many people who watch television or online videos might come across the "Get a Mac" advertisement campaign launched by Apple Inc. personifying the more youthful Justin Long as the cool, hip Mac system and the older, more seasoned John Hodgman as the PC. The "Get a Mac" commercial series depicts the efficiency and user friendliness of Mac while comparing it to the problematic PC. Though the commercial series might seem convincing in favor of the Mac products, the commercial would obviously hide the flaws of the Macs. The actually masks the fact that PC comes out on top at the end of the day with great efficiency, the ability to do a diverse range of work, and its user-friendliness. But now…show more content…
Let us start with the hardware. Building a computer is not easy because finding compatible components is important but once the computer is built, analyzing the key components is pretty simple. Personally, I have a self-built PC which runs top of the line components that is more advanced and affordable than that of an Mac hardware. In the case of a Mac computer, the hardware is integrated which makes keeping up with the latest components such as better CPUs, and graphics card unavailable. Furthermore, in Intel's PC vs. Mac article (Intel makes components for both Mac and PC), Intel states, "Apple's range of product is narrower than that of PCs" even though the Mac system "can be robustly outfitted" (which means add in more gadgets such as web cams and microphones )(Intel). Though the Macs already have web cams and microphones on the system, PC users can surpass these tools and gadgets with even better high definition cameras and studio quality microphones with one quick install. Having said that, it is crystal clear that PC computers have the edge when it comes to computer components because of the PC's ability to upgrade its hardware consistently to make performance more efficient which is a necessity that the Mac computers do not provide in the constantly advancing technological world. In conjunction with computer hardware, the importance of a user-friendly operating system and it's ability to perform an diverse range of tasks is the

Comparing Notebook and Desktop Computers
Computers are one of the most popular kinds of electronic devices in the world today. Whether kid or adult, male or female, everyone wants to learn how to operate the computer. People use computers for different purposes such as typing papers, creating websites, making presentations, browsing on the internet, playing games, etc. In fact, many people are still confused about choosing what kind of computer they want to buy. In the world today, there are two types of computers: notebook/laptop and desktop. They both are actually very different in several ways. In this paper, I will compare the size, connectivity, power, and price of notebook and desktop computers. I can make these comparisons because I have both a notebook and a desktop computer in my apartment.
Size is one of the major concerns for people who want to buy a computer. A notebook/laptop tends to be smaller than a desktop computer. This makes the notebook more convenient to use than a desktop computer. Because of the size, the components, which are built inside a notebook, are relatively small as well. Components of a computer consist of: microprocessor, memory, disk drivers, motherboard, sound card, input/output port, and power supply. Moreover, notebooks seem to be lighter than desktop computers. This also makes a very difference for the users. A notebook's weight will be about 10 pounds or less. Because of this weight, notebook can be brought anywhere easily. Many people use notebooks for business purposes so they can bring their notebook everywhere.
On the other hand, a desktop computer's weight is more than 20 pounds. Because of this, desktop computers are used by people who stay at home most of the time. Besides that, a notebook is built as a fixed computer. In other words, all the components used to build a notebook cannot be changed if something is broken, or all the components cannot be upgraded as a user desires. On the other hand, a desktop computer seems to be less complicated than a notebook because all the components inside the desktop computer can be changed as the user desires. Because of these changes, a desktop computer has more memory capacity than a notebook.
Besides size, connectivity is also an important aspect in order to operate the computers correctly. The connectivity that I mean is an internet connection. There are several components that are used to connect the computers to the internet such as modem, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), wireless, etc.

Moreover, in order to operate the internet connection correctly, a phone line is needed as well. A Modem is a device that allows the computers to transmit data over the telephone line. The fastest speed that a modem can go over the internet connection is 56K. DSL is quite different from a modem because DSL is connected to the telephone line. Moreover, the speed is much faster than a modem. A DSL can go over 1.5 megabits over the internet. Wireless is a device that allows the computers to connect on the internet without any connecting wires. In order to access on the wireless, a wireless pc card (see Image 1) and a wireless access point (see Image 2) are needed. So the internet connection will be connected within the radius of the pc card and the access point. A notebook can use all kinds of components to connect to the internet. One of the biggest advantages of using the notebook over the desktop computer is a wireless internet connection. A wireless internet connection allows users to connect
their computers to the internet easily. There are many places that provide a wireless internet connection such as airports, cafes, campuses around universities, etc. So users can easily bring their notebooks to those places that provide a wireless internet connection and it will be connected to the internet automatically.

In terms of power, a desktop computer seems to be more reliable than a notebook/laptop. This is because the power supply for the notebook comes from the battery. The battery needs to be charged all the time. Most of the time, the battery of the notebook runs out quickly. The longest time that the battery of the notebook can last is about four hours. When the battery of the notebook runs out, the users will not be able to carry away their notebooks freely because they have to charge the battery through electricity. Besides that, people need to spend money to buy a new battery and it is quite expensive. On the other hand, the power supply for the desktop computer comes from electricity. So users do not have to worry about changing any power supply as they have to with the notebook. Moreover, users can turn on their desktop computers for very long time without worrying about anything. By letting the computer on all the time, they can
save more on electricity payments as well rather than turning it on and off, which consumes more power.
Finally, price is the biggest consideration for most people who want to buy a computer. A notebook has a higher price compared to a desktop computer. For example, the price for the notebook (inspiron xps) is higher than the desktop computer (dimension xps) from Dell, although they have almost the same components inside. The notebook costs $2,349 and the desktop computer costs $1,849. This happens because all the components used inside a notebook are very complicated. They are very complicated because they are designed in a very small shape and are supported by high technology as well. In order to create a very small shape, designers have to work harder. On the other hand, the components of the desktop computer are certainly bigger than the notebook, but they are supported by high technology as well. Moreover, the components of the desktop computer can be easily bought from an electronic store. Unlike the notebook, the components have to be bought from the original company such as Dell, IBM, Microsoft, etc.
In conclusion, I would say that both computers are good. They both are highly technological. In fact, people have to use them for different purposes. Because of these purposes, many people like to use a notebook/laptop and others like to use a desktop computer. For myself, I prefer to use a notebook/laptop better than a desktop computer because I like small things and I can bring it to campus so I do not have to wait for someone to finish up in the computer lab. Finally, I would say that they are both very helpful in our lives. This makes them very popular in the world today.
